I’ll be honest. I doubted that this project would get funded. Not because I didn’t believe it was a worthy request by Michael, but because I’ve never seen people respond financially to a request like this. I wasn’t sure that even the NeighborLink community would get behind this.
I met Michael last summer when he first requested help to get the bathroom installed or to help financially with cost. I knew I wanted to help Michael the moment I heard his story, but this was one of those projects that you just don’t even know where to start with.
The project was a huge project. The financial assistance he was receiving from a few funding sources that help veterans was full of strings and processes that worked against the true power of NeighborLink. We just weren’t able to leverage those funds with volunteer labor to accomplish the project, nor were we able to come up with any alternative solutions that were possible. Michael was then forced to move forward with the renovation and figure out how to pay for it later.
He did everything he could and then turned back to us to see if we could help raise funds to help him cover some of the cost. NeighborLink usually doesn’t help with financial requests like this, but since I’ve met Michael and see his situation and exhausted the options with him, I felt like I had to give the Community an opportunity to respond.
To my surprise, they have to the tune of $1525 so far. That’s four donors that have read this request, had compassion, and decided to help a Veteran with the cost of his wheelchair accessible bathroom. This is phenomenal news.
(Update: Funded in about 20 minutes after posting this!) Can you help cover the remaining $175 to meet the goal? Make a donation of any amount and 100% will go directly to paying this bill. We have been releasing the funds as it has come in and we send a check directly to the construction company that did the work. We have a copy of the invoice and worked out the details with the contractor. Your donation is also tax deductible.
I’m glad the community has decided to help Michael with this need. He’s an incredible asset to our community and has just been struck by life’s circumstances. It’s an example that we’re all a few uncontrollable circumstances away from needing the support of others.
