"A volunteer's main source of fulfillment is his gifts and abilities, but someone called of God knows that being used of God is the most fulfilling thing you can do with your life."
Yesterday afternoon, Beth and I helped out with our very first NeighborLink project! Project #4461 to be exact, helping the sweetest lady Roberta clean up her yard a bit. We partnered up with an amazing group of people from both Youth for Christ and the Allen County Juvenille Center. The sun blazed down on us and we all worked up quite the sweat, but it was all worth it to make Roberta's load just a little lighter.
Roberta recently had surgery which placed 2 stints in her heart after it gave out on her about 2 months ago. Her kids have been taking care of her for the past few months and over the course of our time at her home, three of them came to help out with various tasks. Witnessing such a beautiful support system made my heart so happy. While pulling weeds, Roberta and her daughter talked with us and were just as friendly as could be. Roberta took on the mother role right away, constantly asking if we'd like water or icecream. She continued to try to stay outside with us in the heat even! What a trooper! (She did take cover eventually)
As a group, we cleaned out the side yard filled with leaves, sanded a picnic table, pulled weeds, and transplanted some plants! Pretty basic tasks, but what a difference they make on a yard. We all had a blast, and I specifically enjoyed getting to know the kids from ACJC as well as Roberta's family. By coming together we all were able to enjoy a beautiful day of sunshine while serving our neighbor.
Blessed by the opportunity to help out and meet this lovely family.
